(July 23, 2024) In an over four decade platform working with many music giants from Gamble and Huff to Najee, Frank McComb’s talents have stamped an incredible imprint on the entertainment industry. With an independent catalog from Boobeescoot Music which also re-issued his 2000 debut Love Stories, this SoulTracks family member keeps building on soul/R&B/jazz treasures that should possibly last our lifetimes. And as the follow up to “It’s Gonna Be Alright” with DJ Spinna, his artistic output continues blowing minds, gifting his latest single – this festive First Listen focus, “Cancerian Planet” – to those special someones.
McComb elaborates: “I’m in the process of recording Artistic Hibernation, my first studio body of work in eight years. On this album is a song called ‘Cancerian Planet.’. This ‘cosmic style’ (if you will) tune was written and produced in the spirit of fun for all of us who were born under the cancer zodiac sign.”
Though his silky tenor voice is missing, McComb’s keyboard wizardry never lacks, gliding through a funky synthesizer jam filled with gleeful notes and bubbly textures. And “Cancerian Planet” reminisces on the blazing jazz fusion era that included keyboard legends Herbie Hancock and George Duke, who were acknowledged on McComb’s first instrumental music release, A Tribute to The Masters.
Holding down the solid rhythmic background is co-composer, producer and drum programmer Cootus Tuttabug, Genius. For anyone who chooses to listen, dance or whatever the mood of the day, check out “Cancerian Planet.”
