(December 7, 2018) It was unusual news recently to see the news that 73 year old rock and blues guitar legend Eric Clapton was issuing his first holiday album. Happy Xmas has received strong reviews as a thoughtful collection of standards and new material. But the first single from the album is really neither. It is a cover of the excellent Anthony Hamilton Christmas song from a few years ago, “Home For the Holidays.”
We love Anthony’s version of the song, and are glad to see it get some shine and exposure to rock and pop audiences via Clapton’s cover. The original version found Hamilton trading lines with pop vocalist Gavin DeGraw, and the cover gives the song – for obvious reasons – more of a guitar driven adult contemporary feel, though the memorable hook of the song is certainly up front throughout.
Check out this new version of a not-so-old holiday favorite, and tell us what you think.
