First Listen: Ellis Hall adds soulful twist to soft rock classic

(October 1, 2025) The nearly 55 year resume of R&B journeyman Ellis Hall is extensive with several accomplishments. The ones that stand out include his years as one of many lead vocalists that fronted Tower Of Power, being one of the last signees to the Genius Ray Charles’ Crossover label, and the biggie being the lead singer of Kenny G’s first Top 40 pop/soul hit, the 1986-87 remake of Junior Walker & the All Stars’ “What Does It Take (To Win Your Love).”

Speaking of remakes, Ellis’ new single should be familiar to music folks who grew up in the 1970’s. “I’d Really Love To See You Tonight” was the first of many hits for the duo England Dan & John Ford Coley (who also had smashes such as “Nights Are Forever”, “We Never Have To Say Goodbye (Again),” “It’s Sad To Belong” and Todd Rundgren’s “Love Is The Answer”).

Now, as many in SoulTracks-land may know, this reviewer is verrrrrrrrry picky when it comes to remakes (note I don’t use the term “covers” – more on that in another writeup).  As Ellis’ departed boss Brother Ray once said (paraphrasing) – “Just give me a good song and I’ll make it mine.” That is exactly what Hall has done, beginning with the renaming of the cut “I Really Wanna See You Tonight.” The arrangement is straight out of the smooth jazz/R&B playbook, with lush string synths and solid keyboard work. Ellis takes this song nice and slow, allowing his soaring vocals reign supreme. This while staying true to the song’s melody and message. The arrangement packs a solid wallop without overwhelming the listener.

The only other remake of this gem I can think of was from the late Betty “Clean Up Woman” Wright – who stuck close to the tempo and feel of the original. With Ellis, he gives “See You Tonight” his own treatment and has done an excellent job. Looking forward to hearing much more from Mr. Hall in the near future.
