They are soul music royalty: an iconic singer who left us far too soon, and a Grammy-winning daughter who has created her own dynamic musical career over the past two decades. Of course, we’re talking about the legendary Donny Hathaway and his daughter Lalah Hathaway. Fans have loved them each separately, and now, through the miracles of technology, they are together in a new duet version of the father’s most famous song.
Donny Hathaway released “This Christmas” in 1970, and the song has taken on a life of its own over the past half-century, becoming perhaps the most beloved (and covered) R&B Holiday song of that period. Then in 2022, an unreleased demo of the original song has become the basis for a duet between father and daughter, with recently recorded vocals by Lalah being weaved into the demo to create a beautiful “new” family recording of a classic.
