(February 4, 2026) When people I meet socially ask me about artista I follow particularly closely on SoulTracks, UK five-piece soul outfit Mamas Gun usually comes out of my mouth pretty quickly. For more than a decade MG has been wowing us with great music that skirts the pop/soul line, accented with a 1970s flair and a consistent sense of humor.
So it is always a big deal with the quintet – singer/songwriter Andy Platts, drummer Chris Boot, bass player Cameron Dawson, guitarist Terry Lewis and keyboardist Dave Oliver – releases new music. And that’s what’s happening in early 2026, as the band prepares for the release of DIG!, the long-awaited follow up to the excellent 2022 album, Cure The Jones.
To give a sneak peek to the upcoming long-player, Mamas Gun tomorrow releases the album’s title track, featuring legendary keyboardist, flutist and vocalist Brian Jackson, best known for his seminal work with Gil Scott-Heron. The collaboration leads to an atmospheric midtempo number that definitely captures the era of iconic jazz-funk fusion, all brought forward nicely to 2026.
Platts says, “I’d met Brian in 2006, near the start of my career. I had just got my first publishing deal on the back of the promise I showed as a writer and artist. Through that first deal I luckily got the chance to work with the likes of songwriter Rod Temperton, Hall & Oates, and Brian Jackson. So fast forward to 2025 and I have this song “DIG!” 80% written. It needs a final touch and some special sauce. Brian is over in the UK for touring and on my suggestion comes to my studio to hang out. What you hear is what happened next. It’s a song he and I are very proud of.”
Proud they should be. “DIG!” is yet another gem in an arsenal of winners from Mamas Gun, and gets us even more excited to hear the entire album. Check it out below.
