(March 10, 2021) A lot of songs get remade, and a case can be made for these covers. The songs are great, the artist doing the remake loved the song, or he or she wanted to pay tribute to the artist. Often those remakes tend to tread on some very familiar ground that maybe doesn’t need a new traveler, but sometimes a fresh look can work like a charm.
Well, DiaRGi, a Spanish R&B singer, teams with American soul man Rogiers on a torchy, down in the dirt, bear it all cover of “I’ll Take Care of You” that you didn’t think you wanted and needed, but you really did. The original was written by Brook Benton and sung by Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland back in 1959, and it’s been covered and sampled since then by artists ranging from Gil-Scot Heron to Van Morrison. Drake and Rhianna totally reimagined the song and renamed it “Take Care.” So “I’ll Take Care of You” has been covered, but not done to death.
What DiaRGi and Rogiers do is return the song to its blues and gospel roots. It captures the pleading, soul bearing honesty and vulnerability that Bland brought to the 1959 original, while also bringing in the element of two men using their unique vocal instruments to make a competing yet harmonic case that each is the one to bring that needed comfort.
