It shows that the song has made such an impact that another artist wants to put their own spin on it. A recent example of this is Devon Howard’s cover of the Sade classic “I Couldn’t Love You More.”
Devon is a singer, songwriter and producer from Baltimore, Maryland. He came into the music industry as a member of the 90s R&B group Me 2 U (RCA Records), but as a solo artist, he is known as one of independent (indie) soul music’s most celebrated voices. He has multiple #1 hits on the Indie Soul charts (US and UK), and was named R&B/Soul Indie Artist of the Year (2024) by Urban Indie Radio.
When asked why he chose to remake “I Couldn’t Love You More,” Devon said: “This song has always resonated with me because of its honesty and emotional purity.” And what’s more pure emotionally than to tell your special someone that you couldn’t love them more if you tried? Devon delivers this message of devotion in his signature style that’s nostalgic yet fresh. It’s nostalgic because his vocal performance is similar to Sade’s original in 1992 – he sings in almost a whisper like she did. However, it’s fresh because Devon’s version includes the ultra-popular element of Afrobeats throughout the melody.
