First Listen: Deborah Cox pays tribute to Whitney on new album

(April 1, 2017) Deborah Cox has fashioned quite a career for herself, with beauty, brains and the vocal talent that have given her success on record and, more recently, on Broadway. She is now starring in the stageplay version of the smash Whitney Houston/Kevin Costner movie The Bodyguard, and is winning rave reviews.

So it may not be surprising that Cox, who was influenced by the late great Whitney Houston, is paying tribute to the legendary star with a brand new album of Whitney covers. The title cut, perhaps Houston’s most celebrated hit, is The Bodyguard signature song, “I Will Always Love You.” It is a risky move for a new single, as Houston’s original is simply perfect and needs no reprising. But Cox handles it deftly and does the song proud.

“I Will Always Love You” is our newest SoulTracks First Listen. Check it out below and tell us what you think.
