SoulTrackers have followed the many aspects of Deborah Cox, from a Diva bringing it to the dance floor, to a song stylist belting out ballads and paying tributes to Dinah Washington and Whitney Houston. While the comparisons to Whitney have shadowed the Canadian singer/songwriter on several occasions, Cox’s own career path carries plenty of weight: she possesses an unmistakable knockout voice that owns any stage or studio. In other words, Cox can claim her status as a star who straddles several genres, and who has charted hits on the R&B, dance charts and even jazz charts.
After a series of several successful non-album singles in the past few years, First Listen spotlights Cox’s holiday debut on the sassy, “Gimme Gimme Gimme Some Christmas” (Deco Records). This bouncy retro blues romp that opens with a rockabilly rhythm is also featured in the Anna Kendrick Netflix movie, Noelle.
In a departure from her usual powerhouse performances, Cox flexes a deliciously humorous side, gleefully referencing many several holiday chestnuts: “Rockin you around that Christmas tree/I’ll take you by the hand/To my winter wonderland.” Now with her first holiday moment aside, look for Cox to pump up more of the Christmas spirit in a full-length 2020 release. In the meantime, it is a welcome listen when we hear Cox’s sturdy pipes surround “Gimme” in a stew of sizzling holiday fun.
