First Listen: Daryl Johnson gives Old School groove on “Anyone Can Tell”

(May 14, 2019) The band Detroit Memphis Experience features a pair of singers singers in Kathy Kosins and Darryl Johnson. Both are hard working artists who have been on the scene in Motown for years. SoulTrackers heard got a chance to hear Kosins latest “Put the Voodoo On Me” when that track was featured in a First Listen earlier this year, and that track stands at 18 on the Smooth Jazz Network charts.

Johnson’s latest song with the Detroit Memphis Experience, “Anyone Can Tell (We’re In Love)” was number 23 on that same chart and sits at number 34 on John Hook’s Beach Music Top 40 Chart. What that means is that Johnson is another great singer who knows what to do when he’s backed by a good band and he has good material. And “Anyone Can Tell (We’re In Love)” is a good song.

Johnson’s tenor is the type that can find a comfortable home in a church choir stand leading a hymn or singing about how those public displays of affection make it obvious that this couple is a couple. And Johnson is backed by a band that sports a name that makes it clear that they know how to play some southern soul. Johnson is a have-mic-will-travel type of singer. He’s pretty much performed every stage in Detroit as both a lead and backing vocalist, and now he’s doing good work with a band well versed in the musical language of Motown and Stax. Check him out here.
