(August 21, 2019) We’ve been fans of guitarist Dana Johnson for a few years now. The world class guitarist is part of ST fave Avery Sunshine’s band (and her husband to boot), and his musical instincts are usually right on. So we were excited when Dana told us about his new band, Cousin, with talented cohorts Bri Hightower (also known as Kreion), and Rob Milton.
The trio has a new collection out called Cousin, Volume 1 EP, and the sounds are just right for our taste. And for our newest First Listen, we’re completely digging the disc’s first cut, “Easy,” an ethereal ballad that puts Hightower’s vocals out front, with simple guitar strumming and percussion behind. None of the pyrotechnics and ersatz attitude that dominate much of what’s on the radio. Just a simple, melodic, effective number about the struggles of a relationship, beautifully performed.
