(September 22, 2026) Occasionally, it’s OK to judge an artist by its CD cover. For instance, the cover art of Cory Henry’s 2024 Grammy winning Best Roots Gospel Album, Church, illustrates a portion of his artistic story as a very young Henry sits on the organ bench with purpose and a sparkle in his eyes. Though his musicality covers lots of ground, as evidenced once playing a major role in the multi-Grammy winning progressive jazz ensemble Snarky Puppy, the Brooklyn born keyboardist and producer’s roots were firmly rooted in the charismatic church community.
While Church captured the essence of Sunday morning service, Henry’s current CD Devotion still pays respect to praise and worship, yet sprinkled with more jazz improvisation. Besides his church themed solo work, Henry saluted his heroes Stevie Wonder, James Brown and others with the 2021 Best of Me collection, while SoulTracks introduced audiences to Henry with the single, “Happy Days,” featuring The Funk Apostles.
On Henry’s sophomore First Listen spotlight, a cut from Devotion titled “Something Happens” (Apostle Music Group), emphasizes the keys to prayer’s mighty dominion. This reflective piece bathes in a contemporary jazz soul setting backed by a sensitive supporting cast of The Apostle Singers, The Brent Fischer Orchestra and The Fellowship Collective. And the topic of prayer radiates throughout “Something Happens,” thanks to The Apostle Singers’ articulation lifting every lyric so the listener can experience encouragement sans resorting to overdriven choir voices. Guest musician Wonder also fills the throne room offering his trademark soulful harmonica along with Henry’s keyboards. Take a listen while enjoying the peaceful presence of the Lord.
