(November 7, 2025) We all need some encouragement every now and then, especially in these challenging times. And music has a special way of lifting us up through words and melody.
Cornell CC Carter, an international singer/songwriter who is a SoulTracks Readers’ Choice Award winner, believes everyone has the ability to uplift others when they really need it. He’s doing just that on his new single, “Lift It Up.”
This motivational song includes a reminder to appreciate every day you have because the next moment isn’t promised. That hits close to home for Cornell because he lost his son Lytrel this year. Lytrel’s passing led him to create something encouraging for others, in a time when he no doubt needed encouragement himself. “Lift It Up” is a musical pick-me-up that can put a smile on your face.
“Lift It Up” – which is on the UK Soul Chart Top 30 – immediately reminded me of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Happening, Brother” and “What’s Going On,” from the opening notes down to Cornell calling out “Mother, mother” and “Father, father” toward the end. Cornell is singing from his soul and you can hear it. You can also hear all the instruments complement each other, which is not by accident. In this world where songs can be created by artificial intelligence (AI), Cornell steered clear of that. He purposely recorded this song of real meaning with real musicians because, as he says, “that’s where real soul music comes from,” not AI.
Check out “Lift It Up” below, and let it encourage you. You may realize why legendary actor Denzel Washington (yes, that Denzel!) called Cornell CC Carter one of his favorite artists today.
