(April 9, 2025) We have a habit of turning nearly every human interaction into a sports analogy. Messing up the money becomes fumbling the bag. When a person makes a mean spirited remark, they are hitting below the belt. People who get involved in romantic relationships are said to be playing the game of love.
Equating what’s clearly among the most important interactions that any person’s life to a game comes off like an error in comparison. “I Can’t Stand to Lose,” the very good song by Conya Doss that’s filled with clever wordplay and gaming metaphors, reveals how easy it becomes to treat the most serious matters like a board game – seeking to manipulate those we are supposed to care about to gain an upper hand.
Doss makes it clear on “I Can’t Stand to Lose,” that she has no time for those kind of games, because the things that she loses in all that game playing and strategizing – time, trust, peace of mind, and her heart – are extremely hard to get back. She also states that winning for her can only happen when the games stop and the transparency and open communication begin. She has one word of advice for those who persist in the hustle “just walk away.”
