(December 7, 2021) When it comes to Christmas music, it seems that more artists are opting for original songs as opposed to remaking the classics. That’s a decidedly unscientific observation on my part, but I’m sticking with it. And, look, making an original Holiday tune provides the artist with a chance to make a tune that speaks to the time that we live in or addresses something that is going on in the songwriter’s life.
That’s what must have been on the minds of the band Con Funk Shun’s Felton Pilate, when he wrote the holiday tune “Christmas Time of Day.” The members of Con Funk Shun have undoubtedly experienced Christmas as children, parents and for years as professional musicians and hit makers who spent more than a few Holidays on the road and away from their family.
Con Funk Shun is known for their funky party anthems, and they had tunes that are a part of many a Christmas celebration. However, the band also knows how to slow it down, and “Christmas Time of Day” is a mid-tempo jam that has a steppers vibe. The tune comes from the standpoint of somebody looking forward to having the family together for that one annual gathering, The lyrics paint an idyllic picture, and the vocals bring it home.
