(July 14, 2022) The seven-piece band Con Brio is tough to categorize, but categories don’t matter to the growing fan base for the SF-based group that has been described as “a party punk version of Sly & The Family Stone.” And now as the band continues on its tour of the Western United States, it drops the infectious first single from the upcoming EP Seasons.
“Heart On The Dancefloor” opens with an ethereal electronic wall of sound before opening up into a steady dance groove, lead singer Sarah Clarke’s classic R&B influenced vocals, and, of course, the band’s big horn section. And it delivers a message that is right on time. As Con Brio frontwoman Sarah Clarke tells us, “‘Heart On The Dancefloor’ feels like the most personal thing I’ve written. I am so over grind culture. We’re conditioned to feel guilty for moving slowly or taking time for ourselves, but we suffer for it when we don’t live at whatever pace is most conducive to positive mental and physical health. I was really struck by this as we collectively moved out of the toughest parts of the pandemic: we spent all this time learning how to care for ourselves and almost instantly, it felt like we were barreling headlong back into the GO GO GO mentality of a busy world. I want to focus on finding the middle ground and honoring ourselves in the process.”
In the tradition of past Bay Area greats from The Family Stone to Tower of Power to the Sons of Champlin, Con Brio delivers a full-bodied performance on the song that is tough to resist.
