(May 17, 2023) How do we know that the soul music still means something? Because of the sheer number of artists who want to be associated with the term, regardless of whether their music has any connection to gospel music or the blues. That kind of name checking can easily render the term meaningless. However, those who are true fans of soul music will know it when they hear it.
Listeners will hear some true soul music when they hear “Good Love,” the new song by Co Co Jones, featuring her duet partner and bandmate Antonio McGaha. Whether it’s the lyrics where Jones and McGaha testify in sensual and spiritual terms of the power and quality of love that they share and have for each other, or its the sanctified organ work that comes in at the midway point, or church inspired improvised vocalizing that Jones and McGaha slide into to take us home at the end, this is what soul music is supposed to sound like.
“Good Love” is featured on Jones’s latest project Love, Jones. Check it out here.
