(October 17, 2022) Although the sound of today’s R&B is very different from that of yesteryear, there’s a cluster of modern-day artists whose style is reminiscent of the classic soul from the 60s and 70s and are therefore dubbed ‘retro soul’ singers. Claire Davis is one such artist. Based in Toronto, Davis has been called “a jewel of Canada’s soul scene” for having established herself as a powerhouse frontwoman (with the funk band YUKA) and as a go-to background vocalist for the likes of Martha Reeves and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings.
Her latest single “Long Gone” is a sassy breakup tune that isn’t somber with a ‘woe is me’ type of vibe, but is rather an empowering jam that speaks to the fact that it’s better to be by yourself than with someone who doesn’t value you. In fact, Claire says: “This track is for anyone who’s ever walked away from a person/relationship that made them question their worth.”
“Long Gone” sounds like it could’ve been released on Motown or Stax Records back in the day, as it features great background vocals and authentic instrumentation. Adding to that classic soul sound is the fact that Claire – a self-proclaimed “analog girl in a digital world” – prefers recording to tape in order to capture the essence of a live performance in her songs. Mission accomplished!
“Long Gone” is from Claire’s upcoming 10-track LP Get it Right, has already been added to Spotify’s ‘Retro Soul’ playlist and Jazz FM’s B-List. Check out the song here and welcome Claire Davis to SoulTracks!
