(July 7, 2020) Every SoulTracker knows and loves the band Incognito and its founder, Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick. Well Bluey has a lot of things going, including a new solo album and now a coming disc from his other band, Citrus Sun. He says, “If you look at Incognito as being the flagship of my career, consider Citrus Sun as being the indulgent – and for fun only – speedboat that rides alongside her”
This week, Citrus Sun delivers its second single ahead of the new album Expansions and Visions (for August 14 worldwide release), recorded at Krabi in southern Thailand and in London.
For the new single, Bluey and company deliver a gritty cover of the Ashford-Simpson classic “California Soul,” with vocals featuring UK soul man Noel McKoy and with background vocals from Jamiroquai’s Valerie Etienne and Hazel Fernandes.
Bluey says, “We took a bold step in deciding to cover this, but I had a drum groove in mind and, in the absence of strings, a big guitar riff that I knew would give the song a fresh twist.”
The song is a great way to start the day, as the band sounds fantastic and energy abounds. It is a worthy remake of a great song, and we’re proud to present it as our newest First Listen. Check it out below.
