(June 15, 2026) There’s just something about, well, getting ‘grown’– not simply old enough to vote, or of age to cop your first drink at the club, but the good and grown that arrives when you’re 40-plus. You’ve learned, you loved, and you’ve experienced some things that help you to realize what works and what doesn’t, so you’re very careful about who’s in your orbit and why. That’s the era that R&B songstress Chrisette Michele is entering in life and likely the impetus of her new single, “Flower Mamma,” which will be available on all digital platforms on June 19.
When it comes to relationships, women often start out wanting to accommodate to their friends/partners wants and needs, but as they get older they realize their own and stop apologizing for them. That’s what one hears in this plucky, self-assured mid-tempo about standards, boundaries and expectations. The NY native is bringing expected candor and basically asking, well, this is me, can you handle it?:
“I just bought a crib out in the country and I ain’t moving out, now, love me long or leave me alone I need stability for my soul/I don’t got no room for no mess, I don’t have no room for no stress, do you come in peace/I don’t need anyone’s shade, I curate my space, who sent you? Are you coming to graze?”
Her uniquely sultry soprano is the engine that fuels this empowered groove, and Ms. Michele makes it clear that whether she’s your cup of tea or not, you won’t overlook her and she’s not going to stop being her unapologetic self. Flower children are sweet yes, but “Flower Mamma” should find its way into every grown woman’s playlist, because by the time we understand and appreciate its message, we’ve definitely developed a few thorns of our own and hence, deeply understand the fervor from which Chrisette sings.
