First Listen: Chazz Dixon takes on a Bacharach/David classic
The Burt Bacharach/Hal David songbook stands at the high point of the American musical canon. The best-known songs from their library were those made famous by Dionne Warwick. Those tunes have inspired generations of artists to perform cover versions, in part because of the lyricism of those songs, along with arrangements that combined jazz, pop and R&B sensibilities.
That is likely what attracted Chazz Dixon, the singer/songwriter and actor who possesses a sensual and vulnerable tenor voice that is reminiscent of Smokey Robinson and Ronald Isley, to the music of Bacharach and David.
On this First Listen, Dixon does a rendition of “Alfie,” the song featured in the 1966 movie by the same name. “Alfie” has been remade by artists such as Cher, Isley (who included the track on an album he recorded with Bacharach), Chaka Kahn and jazz artists such as Stan Getz and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Dixon notes that he has always loved the song, but what gives his rendition even more significance is that he wears a producer’s hat on this version that will be included on his upcoming CD. Check it out here and when it hits stores on December 10.
