First Listen: Chanté Moore finds her sound again on new single

chantemoore-rightone

(September 3, 2021) Chanté Moore spent much of the 90s and the early 2000s as an R&B darling, a beautiful singer with an voice to match, who fronted a series of hits that displayed both her dynamic vocal range and her keen sense of melody.

But since her nice 2013 release on Shanachie, More is More (for which she won a SoulTracks Readers’ Choice Award), Moore has found herself often trend-chasing, attempting to adopt hip-hop or progressive R&B elements in her music, ostensibly to reach a younger audience. The styles and the songs generally didn’t work, neither gaining a new audience nor satisfying Moore’s longtime fans.

Now age 54, a wiser Chanté Moore attacks 2021 by releasing her best song in nearly a decade, working with producer Jovan Dawkins (Fantasia, Bobby V). “Right One” is a creative blending of styles, effectively incorporating elements of country and Gospel into her R&B sound, with an ending result that sounds both authentic and more organic.

The accompanying video (now showing on Facebook) acknowledges the more folksy elements of the song, showing an always-stunning Moore dancing in a green, open field as she sings of finding the man she’s been looking for.

It is always a treat to witness an artist finding their way to the sound of a second (or third) career stage, and “Right One” feels like it could be the beginning of a new chapter for Chanté Moore, who still sounds fantastic three decades after winning us over with “Love’s Taken Over.” Check it out below.
