(June 20, 2017) For the past several weeks, we’ve been giving SoulTrackers a taste of Home Ground, the groundbreaking new album by Dutch composer/ arranger and musician Stephen Emmer.
The main topic of Home Ground is about a world that is constantly in conflict over land, religion and race. It’s not only black against white, it’s poor against rich, it’s fair against unfair.
One of the impactful songs on the album features a longtime soul music legend, the great Chaka Khan. The amazing Ms. Khan shines on the midtempo “Under Your Spell,” a song that hearkens to the theatrical early- and mid-70s music of artists like Marvin Gaye – in fact, “Under Your Spell” could have fit nicely somewhere in between What’s Going On and I Want You. And Chaka simply sounds great.
