(May 8, 2026) Sometimes music legends just want to have fun. And that is the key behind the newsingle by the iconic R&B singer Chaka Khan. Emerging from her friendship with pop songstress Sia, “Chakzilla” is a campy dance number, the video for which has Chaka dominating a metropolis landscape like a science fiction movie giant.
And like the theme behind so many invasion flicks, the song is a story about breaking out – in this case, breaking out from years of waiting for the right lover who would let the singer’s unguarded brilliance come through:
I know that I am great
I know the rules I’ll break
Forever my heart aches
Cause you’re my equal babe
Musically, the Greg Kurstin-produced “Chakzilla” (the title track from Chaka’s upcoming September album) follows the electronic, layered sound of much of Sia’s own work — more catchy ear candy than classic. And Chaka just eats it up vocally and with her visual presence in the video.
Some longtime CK fans may have mixed feelings about the song, but I think most will get it for what it is: a fun musical lark that brings the divine Chaka back to the foreground, where she should be.
