(November 16, 2018) The duo of keyboardist/guitarist Rob DeBoer and percussionist Tony Grace began producing and remixing dance music during the early 1990s. Sometimes working under the moniker Boomtang Boys, they eventually christened themselves Four80East and made an impact as artists with 1997’s The Album, a striking amalgamation of electronic sensibilities and jazzy nuances. In the two decades since, they’ve garnered a loyal following in the contemporary jazz world through their thematic CD’s and engaging live performances.
Four 80 East recently collaborated with longtime dance floor favorite CeCe Peniston for a message-oriented track aimed directly at the clubs, “Are You Ready.” Constructed around nostalgic strains of house rhythms and soul-leaning keyboard arrangements, the tune doesn’t break any new musical ground; but it offers a welcoming vibe with its understated groove and Peniston’s serenely soulful stylings. While the lyrics of looking towards a better day could use a bit more of a creative edge, the sentiment is well conveyed—and would make a welcome addition to playlists cluttered with negatively charged, gimmicky tracks.
