(March 15, 2022) With the ongoing toxicity dominating the algorithmic web of our Instagram-driven culture, we all seem to know a thing or two about how gruesome it is to maneuver this climate of unrealistic ideals and negative criticism. But indie soul favorite Candace Woodson has discovered a resounding anthem for the moment.

On her latest single, “(Trying to Be) Perfect,” the soulful singer swoons the ear with a sultry kind of Roberta Flack-ness. Glossed with a pinch of jazz inside lush strings and smooth lounge piano, the message of self-care arises, assuring listeners with moving lyrics of acceptance (“Please accept me as I am and not for what I might become.”).

The warm ballad comes to us from the dynamic pen of Valerie Simpson, one half of the Ashford & Simpson songwriting team, originally a cut from Simpson’s 2012 LP, Dinosaurs Are Coming Back Again. After hearing the remake, Simpson echoed her praises of Woodson’s performance. “I very much enjoyed hearing your treatment of  ‘Trying to be Perfect. The message is still timely and you have the vocal power to get it over.”

Check out the rediscovered and revived track from this amazing talent and let us know your thoughts.
