(September 10, 2024) Calvin Richardson has a sound that is both classic and contemporary. That’s because soulful, honest singing never goes out of style. Richardson recalls legendary soul men like Bobby Womack through his emotive baritone and songs that address the high and lows of relationships from the perspective of a man who is honest about his virtues and shortcomings.
Richardson included a remake of Womack’s “I Wish He Didn’t Trust Me So Much” on his debut album. His rendition must have made an impression because the North Carolina native was selected to make a Womack tribute album that coincided with The Poet’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Richardson’s eight albums released over 25 years have yielded songs that run the musical gamut from Southern Soul to blues, soul, R&B and neo-soul. Richardson’s new song, “Ready For the Weekend,” from his upcoming project Five Years Later, finds him making music for the steppers’ set.
The song’s title is self-explanatory, as the tune finds Richardson providing musical play by play for a night on his plans to have a night on the town with his lady. “Ready For the Weekend” finds Richardson preparing for the weekend from the second he punches the clock on Friday afternoon. He sings about calling his lady, and anticipating her arrival, thinking of all the fun they’re going to have. Check out Calvin Richardson’s “Ready For the Weekend” here.
