(January 30, 2026) Kicking off this writer’s initial First Listen for 2026 is this well-timed collaboration from the Butter Funk Family, a collective led by renown Grammy winner Printz Board. Well timed because this very track, “Love Power,”from the group’s upcoming EP, Facts, brings in the funk and a message of love.
The name Printz Board should be familiar with fans of the Black Eyed Peas, with whom Board co-authored hits such as the group’s debut smash, “Where Is The Love.” His works landed on the Peas’ Grammy winning long player, The E.N.D. (Best Pop Vocal Album).
Compact and tight, “Love Power” delivers in three minutes an upbeat groove reminiscent of classic 70’s funk, with a pointed message on top – “The human race is in trouble now…free your mind, put your weapons down…so we can elevate to the love power.” The rhythm section of guitar/bass/Hammond organ/drums carries the tune, augmented by horns. Group vocals with sparse ad-libs would make anyone sing along and keep the tune on repeat.
With all that is happening in our country and around the world (no need for details), the Butter Funk Family delivers a funk anthem that deserves to be heard. Printz and company here carry on the soul tradition of laying down a message in the music, one that would make the authors of the referenced tune – Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff – very proud.
