First Listen: Macy Gray helps Busty and the Bass find “Love”

(July 21, 2020) The story of how “Out of Love,” the new single and title track by Canadian funk band Busty and the Bass that features Macy Gray on vocals, came together is one of creative serendipity. The tune stated out as a remix that the trombonist was working on and was never supposed to be an original song. But then the vocals came together. And the band found the perfect vocal vehicle to deliver the goods on a tune about a person begging to be let down easy, because she needs a little help in getting on with the rest of her life.

The band has a history of collaborating with R&B and funk legends. Their new album includes a collaboration with George Clinton on the tune “Baggy Eyed Dope Man,” and they previously included a live version of Gray’s breakout hit “I Try” on Lift, their 2016 EP. Busty and the Bass had been performing “I Try” as a part of their live show and Gray saw footage of one of those performances. The band’s producer made the connection and the rest is history.

“Out of Love” is an infectious and funky cut that features a bumping bass line that gets feet tapping as it engages in a on the one conversation with the horn section. The arrangement is breezy and fun and right on time for summer. That the arrangement is vessel for what is essentially a kiss-off song delivered with Gray’s trademark irony and humor makes it the ideal song for 2020. Check out the song and the lyric video below.
