He is known as “The Boss,” an iconic rock performer whose concerts are life events. But one thing he has never been known as is an R&B singer. But that may change for the great Bruce Springsteen, who will be issuing the new album Only The Strong Survive on November 11, a lovingly created series of classic R&B covers.
Springsteen has talked about the influence of 50s and 60s R&B on his music, and in the 1980s he helped resuscitate the career of his childhood hero, Gary US Bonds. But for the new album, Springsteen is taking on those early, influential songs himself, with covers of tunes originally recorded by The Temptations, Jimmy Ruffin, Aretha Franklin, William Bell and more. And he brings along Memphis legend Sam Moore on a couple of songs.
For the first advance single, Springsteen takes on “Do I Love You (Indeed I Do),” a song originally recorded by famed Motown songwriter/producer Frank Wilson. Springsteen gives the song a 60s Motown sheen, with a driving rhythm section and no shortage of orchestration. It’s a fun romp, and he gives it a legit, soulful vocal performance. Check out “Do I Love You,” and help us welcome Bruce Springsteen, Soul Man.
