First Listen: “Give Me The Night” takes a jazzy turn

(January 16, 2022) George Benson’s “Give Me The Night” was one of the most memorable R&B crossover singles of the early 80s, and is considered a Yacht Soul classic. It came in the middle of Benson’s Imperial Period, where everything he touched seemed to connect, and his collaboration with producer Quincy Jones and legendary songwriter Rod Temperton created a moment of absolute greatness.

Despite its iconic status, we’ve heard very few covers of “Give Me The Night” over the years. And we’ve certainly never heard one like the jazz-lounge single that has just been released by British Standard Time. The collective put together by  accomplished songwriter and musician Alex Webb features SoulTracks Readers’ Choice Award nominee Tony Momrelle on vocals and a cadre of great musicians in the collective.

The song absolutely works, taking the song in an entirely different direction and pressure testing the original Temperton composition (trust me, it passes beautifully). And Momrelle is exactly the right vocalist to lead the vocal track.
