You hear Curtis Mayfield in the vocals of Brian Owens. He possesses a high tenor voice that appears to be seasoned from years of singing in the church, so he definitely brings that element of soul his vocals.
Owens fronts a band called The Deacons of Soul, and with a name like that you expect to get some tight doo-wop inspired backing vocals complete with gospel inspired call and response, as classic soul instrumental arrangements that feature stings, horns and don’t forget those inspirational messages featured in the lyrics.
