In 2008, the multi-instrumentalist and producer Brian Culbertson released his 10th studio album, Bringing Back The Funk, which was executive produced by Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire and spent 2 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz chart. The album is a hotbed of tasty nu soul and features Culbertson’s inspired collaborations with funk legends like Bootsy Collins and soul royalty like Gerald Albright.
But the track on the album belongs to the delightful soulstress Ledisi, who delivers all her vocal skills and power on “The World Keeps Going Round,” a piano-anchored ballad that slowly builds into a funkfest of wah wah guitars and muted horns on a bass groove that winds like a snake down a country road. An instant classic, indeed. Enjoy.
