First Listen: Brad Sweet and Avianna Acid give us the “Placebo Effect”

San Diego producer Brad Sweet has a unique love of fusing R&B with a smooth acid-dubstep sound. He’s working on his first album, The Human Response, due in March and he’s leading off with the haunting single, “Placebo Effect,” featuring vocalist Avianna Acid.

The song takes the medical term Placebo Effect and applies it to love. Says Brad, “The song itself explores the relationship between the Placebo Effect as amedical phenomenon that creates physical changes in the body due to falsemental stimuli and a toxic relationship and the effect the brain can have on the body. It allows sick patients to get better from taking a fake pill that they think is real. Could the same be true in relationships? How addictive is a toxic relationship and how much control can your emotions have over your body to keep coming back to it?

After meeting Avianna, Brad knew she was right for the song: “I showed her this song I was working on, it was really only a beat and a few chords but she loved it and started humming a melody that fit beautifully with it. We knew we had to record together on this but she only had one more day in town so she started writing lyrics on the spot to this concept she had in her head about the Placebo Effect. I loved it and the ideas started pouring out from both of us from lyrics to melodies to chords.”

It’s an interesting song from an interesting new artist. And it’s our newest First Listen. Check it out below and tell us what you think!
