First Listen: Bootsy Collins is back to make it “Worth My While”

(August 29, 2017) The name Bootsy Collins probably won’t be the first that comes to mind when naming great balladeers from the 1970s. That list will include names ranging from Marvin Gaye to Barry White to Peabo Bryson and Jeffrey Osborne, to name just a few. However, Bootsy had some slow jams that simultaneously captured his humor, whimsy, and great lyricism that carried some sly double entendre. Then, of course, there was slowed down grinding funk that was of course propelled by his thumping, plucking and rolling on the guitar.

Hard core Funkateers note “What’s a Telephone Bill” and “I’d Rather Be With You,” a track that’s had quite the second life as a hip-hop staple in samples and in film. My favorite is a tune from his 1978 album Bootsy?, the last track on that great album, “As In I Love You.”

Well, Bootsy is back in 2017, better and funkier than ever with yet another slow cut. “Worth My While,” is a funk-rock ballad that features slashing guitars, vocals by up and coming Columbian born singer Kali Uchis, and Bootsy’s signature rap. “Worth My While” is Bootsy at flexing his creative and imaginative powers, and is the first single from the upcoming October release, World Wide Funk. Check it out.
