(August 12, 2024) Bootsy Collins is a true musical legend, and when he decides to embark on a new project, he won’t have any problems finding collaborators. That’s the case for new record, Album of the Year #1 Funkateer, that is due to drop on Oct. 25.
The 17 tracks on Album of the Year #1 Funkateer find Bootsy working with artists ranging from October London to Dave Stewart of the Eurhythmics to Ice Cube and Snoop on funk party anthems such as the title track to On the One ballads like “Pure Perfection,” the tune featured in this First Listen.
Bootsy prowess as a balladeer has always been his underappreciated secret weapon. He can get the party started with songs like “Bootzilla,” but include on that same album the hidden gem “As in I Love You.” Then, there are tracks like “What’s A Telephone Bill,” “Munchies for Your Love,” “Worth My While,” Bootsy’s duet with Kali Uchis from his 2017 World Wide Funk album. Of course, there is his definitive slow jam “I’d Rather Be With You.”
So, Bootsy can speak the language of love, and all the elements for a Bootsy blue light ballad can be heard on “Pure Perfection.” The track features a deep helping of On the One funk courtesy of “Bedroom Bootsy’s” bass playing. The song includes his witty lyricism and slick double entendres and the pairing of Bootsy laid back vocal style with his duet partner Fantaazma. The track even includes a dab of rock guitar and jazzy piano riffs. Check it out here.
