First Listen: Bob James refreshes a classic on “Submarine”

(July 14, 2018) Bob James has had an incredibly productive career, as a solo artist, as part of the group Fourplay, and in many other configurations that have made him a contemporary jazz legend. And now James is returning on August 31 the evosound label with a brand new album, Espresso. The album captures James’ desire to release new music with a simple trio sound (piano, drums, bass), and he recruited acclaimed drummer Billy Kilson and bassist Michael Palazzolo to round out the group.

The first single from the album may sound familiar to SoulTrackers. Back in 1974, James released “Nautilus,” a haunting piece that became one of the most sampled songs ever, later borrowed by Run-DMC (“Beats To The Rhyme”) as well as by Eric B & Rakim, Public Enemy, and Naughty By Nature, among others. James now takes “Nautilus” and brings it forward with a fresh, lighter sound that gives it a whole new vibe and makes it feel right for Summer.

We’re pleased to present “Submarine” as our newest SoulTracks First Listen. Check it out below and get ready for a shot of Espresso on August 31.
