(March 23, 2022) When you hear “Can We Get Back to Love,” the new song by Binky Womack, you get the feeling that his pained plea for humanity to embrace love comes to him honestly. After all, Womack’s famous father and uncles got their start in the music business singing gospel music. While the Womack brothers went on to make a major mark in music on the secular side, the spiritual element remained in their music.
“Can We Get Back to Love” is the classic fusion of gospel, blues and R&B that we know as soul music. Musically, the song is a features bluesy guitar riffs while the vocals contain the tight harmonies and call and response between lead and backing vocals that have been a part of Black music since the heyday of gospel quartet singing. Lyrically, “Can We Get Back to Love,’ addresses themes such having the kind of respect for our fellow man and woman that Womack believes people used to embrace.
The song has a message that can be applied on both the spiritual and secular sense. Womack possesses the same gravelly and emotive baritone as his uncle, Bobby Womack, who also taught and inspired him to play the guitar. “Can We Get Back to Love” has the kind of timeless and timely message that has made soul music the conscience of our country and world for generations.
