First Listen: Bigg Robb’s Santa wants some Lovin’
(December 10, 2017) It’s that time of year. The time that seems has creeped past Halloween and the World Series and now enters our collective consciousness around the start of the baseball season. Christmas – or at least the commercial aspects of the holiday – seem to come earlier every year. That means we are well into Christmas music release season. This is the time when Christian and secular, rock, jazz, R&B and country artists, to name a few genres, drop projects of original holiday music or covers of the Christmas classics. Some of these projects will be worth the listen if jaded Christmas curmudgeons such as myself can get over our cynicism, but at some point, the songs and albums blend into one massively jolly and holy blur.
While many songs tend to run together, I’ll bet all your holiday candies and nuts that you won’t hear too many Christmas tunes like Bigg Robb’s, “Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin.’” The tune is pure Bigg Robb, a southern soul cut sporting an element of funk. “Santa Wants Some Lovin’” is a novelty song delivered by an artist who, like the fabled Saint Nick, loves to bring joy. “Santa Wants Some Lovin’” has the attitude of a southern soul “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” that is told from the point of view of a very amorous Saint Nick rather than some kid with an over active imagination. The poor kid would probably need therapy if he spied Bigg Robb and his Mrs. Claus getting in the mix. Check it out.
