(May 30, 2026) Bigg Robb is the king of good time music. However, within the fun times that draw fans onto the floor to dance to funk, Southern Soul or hip-hop, there’s also a message. I first saw the dual nature of Bigg Robb’s musical personality when I reviewed his album Jheri Curl Music back in 2009.
That album featured a cut called “Family Reunion Song” that featured his friend and longtime collaborator Shirley Murdock. The song draws Southern Soul with that voice box Dayton funk that Big Robb’s mentor Roger Troutman made famous, and it celebrates that cross generational staple of summertime fun and unity – the family reunion.
Robb decided to revisit and update “Family Reunion Song” just in time for the 2026 family reunion season. Murdock is back and her soaring vocals add that gospel infused soulfulness to the song. Robb honors his mentor Troutman through the use of the voice box, but the 2026 version leans more heavily into the Southern Soul musical arrangements where Robb has found commercial and critical success.
The accompanying video that features the sights, sounds and food that you would see at a family reunion was produced by Bigg Robb and Oui-Wey Collins, who is the son of Bootsy Collins. Check out “Family Reunion Song” here
