(September 23, 2025) It can be a daunting task to take on a creative work by a legend. Instant comparisons will result and if the artist isn’t secure enough in their own talent, it could impact their ability to create in the future. In the case of BETH, a singer/ songwriter from Detroit, she takes the challenge of interpreting a legend on her latest single, “Call Me,” while sprinkling a lot of her own seasoning in at the same time.
A one-time contestant on The Voice and daughter of one of the legendary Funk Brother Johnny Griffth, BETH’s latest single is not a cover of the song most notably recorded by Aretha Franklin, but is more of an infusion of said classic into an original tune. The familiar piano melody lays the groundwork for the ballad, but this track feels modern and current, with the help of production by Marcus “Deheatmizer” Devine. BETH’s vocal is both confident and sensual as she talks about all the things that she would do for the one she loves if they “would just pick up the phone, and don’t hesitate to call me.” The melody and hook firmly compliment the track and sample, resulting in a song that feels significantly more assertive than what is found in the aforementioned original.
The latest single from the album, Get To Know Me, which debuted in the Top 10 on both the Amazon and iTunes charts, “Call Me” is not an attempt to update a song from long ago. It’s a step forward by BETH, a performer continuing to showcase her prowess as an artist who can handle a little pressure, creating musical diamonds for her listeners to enjoy.
