SoulTracks Instant Classic: Berget Lewis flies on “Aviator”

bergetlewis

Dutch soul singer Berget Lewis is a virtual stranger to US audiences, but if there is justice that will change. She began her professional career singing background for saxophonist Candy Dulfer. Then, over two decades she slowly worked her way into the spotlight in the Netherlands, and landed the plum role of Effie in the stageplay Dreamgirls.

In 2013, Lewis release a terrific self-titled album that made some noise in Europe but didn’t really make it over the ocean to the US. But I’ve had my iPod stuck on her uplifting, brilliant hit song from that album for nearly two years now. “Aviator” shows Lewis’s powerful voice and, combined with the big arrangement, feels like an anthem of empowerment and overcoming obstacles. And it’s simply a great song.

I’m anxiously awaiting new music from Berget Lewis, but in the meantime I want to share with SoulTrackers an artist worth noting and a song that has become one of my current faves.

Check out “Aviator” below and tell us what you think.
