(March 28, 2018) Basia will release Butterflies on May 18, and surprisingly the project will only be her fifth solo album since she branched out on her own with 1987’s Time and Tide. The Polish born vocalist brings a distinct vocal style that features a sweet alto and crisp phrasing and just a hint of her eastern European accent shining through.
Her first single from Butterflies is a “Matteo,” a mid-tempo track that features a bossa nova swing and tells the story of how the birth of a child named Matteo changed their lives.
Butterflies is Basia’s first album with original work since 2009’s It’s That Girl Again, and she says that she and her longtime collaborators that include pianist Danny White favor an unhurried pace that meshes with their art and their lives. That relaxed pace insures that Basia isn’t overly concerned about musical trends. “We’ve been recording Butterflies for a few years, without any hurry, making sure that we were always true to ourselves. Although we are aware of what is successful in the music scene at the moment – we avoid copying and we try not to be influenced by it.” Check out “Matteo” here.
