First Listen: Amel Larrieux is not “Afraid” to return to music scene

It’s been too long since we’ve heard from the talented Amel Larrieux, but the former Groove Theory lead is coming back in August with a new album called Ice Cream Everyday that we can’t wait to hear.

In the meantime, Amel gives us a sneak peek with the new single, “Afraid.” Produced by long time collaborator and husband, Laru Larrieux, the song boasts a blend of her past singles such as “Get Up” and “For Real,” mixed with more aggressive and distinct production work. Amel says, “The words fell out of me as they do for all songs. I’m not always conscious of why I’m writing a lyric but my subconscious always is and it informs the content of the song. I can say that it isn’t a coincidence that the lyric is sensual and passionate. The music evoked those sentiments from the moment I heard it. I am a serious romantic and LOVE a very yearning, metaphoric prose when it comes to issues of the heart. For me, the more visual the lyric, the more visceral it is for the listener.”
