First Listen: 80s star Alton Edwards returns with “Don’t Judge Me”

(July 21, 2026) Staying power is an admirable quality in a field as unpredictable as the music business. Throughout changes in technology and corporate structures, constant competition and the fickle tastes of consumers are arguably the most certain mainstays. Some performers’ paths are notably consistent, while many reinvent and resurface amidst changing trends, and still others seemingly retreat from the limelight completely. London-based Alton Edwards has seen many sides of the industry over the last four decades, from his time as a successful major-label artist with limited promotional support to his journey as an independent musician recording his own material and touring frequently.

On his new single, “Don’t Judge Me,” Edwards fuses bluesy and funky vibes atop a midtempo groove that drives a laid back melody with what he describes as a “deeply personal” message. “You see the surface only, you don’t know what roads I’ve walked/You hear a piece of my story, but not the nights I fought.” So begins the first verse of the song. He explains: “Every person has a story, and we should choose compassion before passing judgment.” With moody guitar shades, chilled-out horn hues, and the cool swagg of the drum track, the tune conveys its meaning with a calm resolve.

Edwards glides from a cool tenor composure to falsetto with bold conviction over the course of “Don’t Judge Me.” Fans of classic R&B and funk who aren’t familiar with his recent work might be surprised by the shift in tone and style from the singer’s signature hit, 1981’s “I Just Wanna (Spend Some Time with You).” Yet listeners familiar with more recent releases such as his quiet-storm album About Time and last year’s Southern soul-driven “Where Did the Love Go” will recognize the quietly passionate voice behind a versatile catalog of songs.
