(October 31, 2019) Most SoulTrackers know ubiquitous Cali-based singer Aloe Blacc. He’s been lighting it up on his own albums and as a guest vocalist on other projects for a big decade now. But our readers are less likely to know the funky L.A. combo called The Grand Scheme.
Consisting of Te’Amir Yohannes Sweeney on Drums, Farmer and Peter Dyer on Keys, Joel Van Dijk on Guitar, Joseph Gonzales on Bass, Randal Fisher on Sax and Chris Bautista on Trumpet, TGS is hitting us for the first time, and they are doing it with Blacc on a number dripping a funky James Brown beat.
“Hold On To Your Bag” would have fit perfectly at a 1969 party, and it sounds just as fresh a half century later. The wah wah guitars build the foundation, and the band’s call and response with Blacc, punctuated by the horn chops, all make it awfully tough to avoid smiling as you hear these guys at work.
