(September 28, 2020) Mark “Return of the Mack” Morrison might be considered a one-hit wonder by many listeners in the States. The distinctive hip-hop R&B crooner has remained a prolific artist and producer, however, over the last two decades. Following a number of impactful single releases in Europe, the artist has recently shifted his focus to running a label, Mack Life Records.
Mack Life’s latest release is a notable collaboration by soul heavyweights Christopher Williams, Alexander O’Neal, and Gregg Jackson. Entitled “Roses,” the romantic slow-jam finds Williams opening the first verse with his signature husky yet tender tone. Paired with a back-to-basics melodic structure, the tune quickly draws the listener in to the halcyon days of mid-‘90s R&B. While O’Neal’s voice has roughened with the years, it’s contrasted nicely by prolific nightclub singer Jackson’s supple tenor phrasing.
With lyrics that are respectful and unassuming, “Roses” is a most pleasing retreat from over-thought fare permeating much of the airwaves and many streaming sites at present. Delivered with appropriately earnest conviction by Williams, O’Neal, and Jackson, it’s likely to become a welcome addition to many fans’ personal playlists.
