(June 8, 2022) Maryland-born Alexa Givens grew up singing in church and listening to jazz standards while cutting her teeth as a vocalist in the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Orchestra. Now eighteen years of age and entering the renown Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship, Alexa brings to listeners the single, “Broken Record”.
While Alexa cites Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande as influences, “Broken Record” reflects a jazzy almost retro-R&B/Pop vibe reminiscent of the early-mid 1970’s works of pop and soul ladies such as Joni Mitchell and the late Minnie Riperton – think Joni’s “Court & Spark” meeting Ms. Riperton’s “Perfect Angel.” Driven by a mid-tempo groove and tasty acoustic guitar licks, Alexa’s sweet soprano rides the melody like a gentle ocean wave. While the single clocks in a little over two and a half minutes, Alexa leaves the listener wanting for more – and that’s a good thing.
“Music is a time capsule for different eras of life,” Givens says. “I want to be able to teleport people.” And that she does with her take on the sweet side of romance with “Broken Record,” which makes the perfect groove to kick off the summer.
