First Listen: Aleksi Glick of Snack Cat delivers a touching tribute

(April 29, 2024) New York-based jazz guitarist Aleksi Glick is a talent who is rising up the ranks. Coming from a musical family and being raised on a consistent diet of jazz, rock and classical, the young artist, who has already worked with the likes of Grammy-winning talent Roberta Flack and J. Hoard, moonlights as a band mate in the NY-based R&B/funk band Snack Cat and has worked up an impressive resume contributing tracks to a wide range of multimedia including the ‘80 For Brady’ motion picture soundtrack and shows like Marvel Studios’ ‘What If…?,’ VH1’s ‘Black Ink Crew’ and Netflix’s ‘The Circle.’ Fresh of the heels of his debut solo album (2022’s Guitar & Me), Glick is pushing onward with a forthcoming album and an ambitious lead single to support it.

After a cool 20-second intro carried by glorious complex guitar chords, “She Told Me” transitions into a soulful midtempo groove gracefully led by vocalist Laureana (Olivia Chineamo). Two minutes in, the band fires up a smoldering segment with Nathan Ellman-Bell’s fiery rhythms and Eric Trudel’s commandeering sax solo before sunsetting back into a sweet spot of smooth jazz tranquility and sweet words of comfort: “She told me you’ll be alright/There are times to laugh and times to cry.”

While reflecting on the song’s origins and its meanings, Glick lets us in on the heartfelt musings. “‘She Told Me’ is a composition dedicated to my mom,” he says. “The song reflects on how my mother has been an endless source of strength, inspiration and unconditional love.”

The arrival of such a single, just in time for the next wave of Mother’s Day tributes, feels just right. Glick’s second solo album, World Traveler, drops on May 10 on Pinch Records.
