Soul and Jazz audiences know Detroit native guitarist Dee Brown, but it has been a few years since we’ve heard new music from him. But Dee has returned with the brand new album, Brown-Sugar, Honey Coated Love now out on Innervision Records. The album is foundationally inspired by Proverbs 27:7 which says, “A satisfied soul loathes the honeycomb, but to a hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.”
We’ve taken a special liking to the song “I’m Here For You (I’ll Never Leave You).” Says Dee about the song: This track is written by me with Shaunia Evett Edwards (vocals) and Chip Dickson (bass, keyboards, drums, vocals, producer, arranger). When we started this track, it had no vocals. I was listening to the track and I thought it needed something else. I had been working with Shaunia, together performing in the Detroit area, but I did not know she possessed writing and vocal arrangement skills. Shauna and I were talking, she mentioned that she was interested in writing, recording and the process of making records. So I had this track and I said, well let’s go into my pre-production studio and see what we can come up with. We had a chance to pre-record and she came up with some fantastic vocal lines, melodies and words. Than we went ahead and recorded the track in the production studio. Shaunia recorded all vocal parts, including leads and backgrounds. It was produced by Chip Dickson. After the completion of this track, I thought it really fit in good as a change of pace to the songs that were already on my debut project for Innervision Records. It’s a love song, which encompasses what love is all about.
